Asked: What is the best drugstore hair color?

In June 2012 I dyed my hair dark brown at a salon. Since summer is coming up, I'd like to lighten my hair a shade or two, nothing too drastic. I have about 4-5 inches of natural grow out. I'd like to lighten my hair at home using a drugstore hair color. Does anyone have any recommendations as to which hair dye can lighten my dark brown hair slightly? I'd like to avoid any coppery tones that can happen with lightening hair (if at all possible). I'm 19 so I don't have any gray hair to cover or anything. I also do have access to a Sally's Beauty Supply store, but I don't trust myself to administer the professional dye, developer, etc. The most I feel comfortable doing is applying drugstore hair dye. Also, could anyone help me predict how the hair dye will affect my natural grow out? My dyed hair is dark brown and my natural grow out is about a shade lighter with natural golden undertones.

siince your natural color is lighter this is going tbe hearder to correct on your own if it were the other way around being your natural color darker and color treated hair lighter it would have beeneasier picking a darker shade to blend it all in…honestly i would go o a salon bc i wouldnt want your hair turing orange an breaking..i know its something you dont want to do but you doing it is only going t turn into a nevr ending battle trying to get the right matching shades ad byth time yourdone your hair will most likly be very damaged..the ony other alternaive is to do a dark semipermanent rinse every 2 weeks till your natural color is all in..one with no ammonia so its easier on your har and scalp..good luck

Never apply a color over a color if you are going lighter. You will end up with light roots where your new growth is, and the previously colored hair will stay at the same shade. Trust me i have been a salon owner for 19 years and a color wont take on a color unless u are going at least one shade darker. Corrective colors are too expensive and sensitive to work with, and your hair will look pretty bad with two different tones.

The process is simple if you are familiar with hair colors. You will need a shampoo bleach to lighten your previously colored hair to the desired shade (or level) then you can apply the new color to you hair for about 35/45 minutes.

Good luck.
