What Real Hair Extensions Can and Can’t Do For Hair Loss

Thinning hair or steady hair loss is a cause for concern, especially if the reason is due to a medical issue for example. If you are experiencing rapid thinning or loss, you should always seek advice from your GP first. However, if you have naturally thin hair and would like to find ways to boost it, you can opt for a temporary volumising solution such as extensions.

According to experts however, many women place a great amount of expectation on simple hair extensions to help overcome their problem.

Real hair extensions are available as either clip-in (best for temporary and daily wear); bonded extensions (extension fused to natural hair) and weaves – extension hair is weaved and blended with natural hair. Because of the strain placed on the follicles, extensions are best used to boost existing natural hair which is relatively strong. If your natural hair has been treated with bleach or a perming solution, it will be weakened and prone to snapping. Thus extensions will only worsen the problem as there is no ‘purchase’ for the new hair and the extensions could damage your natural hair.

Real hair extensions are very effective for boosting volume and length when the hair is thinning evenly all over the scalp. Unfortunately, if you experience hair loss in specific areas such as on the front of your head or you have patches of loss i.e. alopecia, extensions will not cover these areas. There are however methods of hair restoration that do not involve surgery and can boost overall volume. These include integration, extensions attached to a wire and fitted by an expert and top or partial hair pieces which provide excellent coverage across the parting/scalp area.

Integration is a relatively new procedure which blends real hair with your natural hair. Particularly effective for overcoming large areas of loss, the process is painless and does not involve surgery. Real hair is colour matched to your own and then attached to a micro-fine piece of gauze mesh. The mesh is then fitted to the scalp and your natural hairs are threaded through (much like a traditional highlighting cap method) then blended. Many women seeking a way to overcome hair loss, and find that extensions are not suitable, opt for this procedure. This service is available from reputable clinics only – unfortunately you won’t find this at your local hairdresser!

Real hair extensions, while an excellent way of boosting the appearance of naturally thin hair, are in general not recommended for significant thinning or loss. Reassuringly however, there are many, many ways to overcome hair loss and enjoy a full head of hair – without resorting to surgery.
