Asked: MY hair is damaged for no reason, why is this?

I'm a 23 year old guy with long hair to the middle of my back.I eat fairly healthy and take my regular vitamins+ biotin and saw palmetto.I straighten my hair once a week and other than that I leave it totally alone except for keeping it in a loose ponytail when I work and I comb my bangs behind my ears instead of pulling them back.I know straightening is bad but that's the only thing I do to it and that certainly can't be the only cause.

I've never dyed, permed, or chemically treated my hair whatsoever, I only shampoo my hair every 4 days or so "give or take" and I take better care of my hair than my sister who styles hers almost daily and dyes it all the time.

I've just noticed quite a bit of hair strands sticking up that are only a couple inches long while the rest are fully grown. It looks like breakage or something but it's all over my hair, not just on the ends where it normally occurs but is mostly on the top of my head.

It's far worse when it's wet and I'm afraid to go swimming due to it and my hair looks horrible for the first day after washing it then the strands smooth down.

I'd really like some help with this issue, it's driving me crazy, I'm about to just shave it all off but I'd rather avoid that as I've been growing it out for nearly a year.

You didn't mention conditioning man and that is probably the most important step in healthy hair maintenance! You said you only straighten your hair once every week or so but make sure you are using a heat protectant when you do this. As well, the longer the hair that you have, the more naturally prone to breakage your hair is so make sure that you are really conditioning it well and getting a trim at least every 6 months cause once you start growing long hair, the ends are going to split if you don't get them cut whether you are 'damaging' it. Also mad props for being a guy with long hair….thats hard to come by and I always think it looks nicer than short hair haha!

Might be coz of insufficient nutrients to your hair root. You can provide enough strength to your hair by practicing this yoga exercise. It works out very welll.

Look into the water quality in your area. I moved to SoCal 2 years ago, where the water quality is some of the worst in the country and my hair got super dried out and started breaking off, getting split ends etc.

You can buy a shower filter for a very reasonable price at Lowes or Home Depot.
